Low Income Public Housing

Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single-family houses to high rise apartments for elderly families. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers Federal aid to local housing agencies (HAs) that manage the housing for low-income residents at rents they can afford. HUD furnishes technical and professional assistance in planning, developing, and managing these developments.

SMHA owns and manages several properties, which include high rise apartments and scattered sites. A list of the apartments can be found on the Our Facilities webpage.

Additional Information

Flat Market Rents & Utility Allowances: SMHA offers Public Housing residents an option to pay a flat rent instead of an income-based rent. Flat rent is based on market rents rather than income. If a resident increased their household income, their flat rent would not change.

SMHA also has a utility allowance chart for public housing residents who are required to pay the gas and electric service. These can vary based on location. You can view the SMHA flat rents and utility allowances for Public Housing in the link below:
